Why Does My Tooth Hurt When I Bite Down?

Pain when biting down can be uncomfortable and concerning. Whether the pain is sharp dull or only happens occasionally it is often a sign that something is wrong beneath the surface. Tooth pain during chewing should never be ignored because early treatment can prevent more serious dental problems.

A Cracked or Fractured Tooth

One of the most common causes of pain when biting is a cracked tooth. Cracks are often very small and may not be visible during a quick look in the mirror. When pressure is applied during chewing the crack can shift slightly causing sharp pain. This type of discomfort may come and go depending on how you bite. Teeth grinding chewing ice or biting hard foods can all increase the risk of cracks.

Tooth Decay or Cavities

Tooth decay is another frequent reason for pain when biting down. As a cavity grows deeper it can reach the inner layers of the tooth where the nerve is located. Biting puts pressure on the damaged area which can trigger pain. Some people feel mild sensitivity while others experience intense discomfort. Untreated decay can lead to infection or tooth loss.

Problems With Fillings or Crowns

Dental restorations such as fillings or crowns can cause pain if they are not properly aligned with your bite. A filling or crown that is slightly too high can place extra pressure on one tooth when you chew. This often causes soreness or sharp pain even though the tooth itself is not damaged. A simple bite adjustment from your dentist usually resolves this issue quickly.

Gum Disease and Bone Loss

Gum disease can also cause pain when biting down. As gum disease progresses it damages the tissues and bone that support your teeth. This can make teeth feel tender loose or sore when pressure is applied. Inflammation in the gums can also expose the roots of the teeth which are more sensitive to force.

Infection or Dental Abscess

An infection at the root of a tooth can cause pain when biting. This pain is often persistent and may be accompanied by swelling sensitivity to heat or a bad taste in the mouth. Dental infections require prompt treatment to prevent the spread of bacteria and more serious complications.

Teeth Grinding and Jaw Pressure

Grinding your teeth places excessive force on your teeth and jaw. Over time this pressure can inflame the ligaments around the teeth and lead to pain when chewing. Many people grind their teeth during sleep and may not realize it until symptoms appear.
